All you would like to know about skin aging!?
Apr 22, 2022

Between the body and the outer world, the skin acts as a barrier. In addition to protecting the body from water loss and microbial illness, it has a considerable cosmetic influence. People's social behavior and moral status may be influenced by their appearance of youth and attractiveness.

Your skin changes as you get older. It thins down, loses fat, and no longer seems as plump and smooth as it used to be. Your veins and bones are more visible. Scratches, wounds, and bumps may take longer to heal. Sun tanning for years or continuous sun exposure can lead to wrinkles, dryness, age spots, and even cancer.

When aging process starts?

Organ aging begins at birth, and skin aging is no exception. Our skin is exposed to a multitude of elements as we get older, including the sun, harsh weather, and bad behaviors. However, there are steps we can do to preserve our skin supple and youthful-looking. A variety of factors impact the aging process of your skin, including your lifestyle, nutrition, heredity, and other personal habits. Free radicals, that have become hyperactive and unstable as a result of smoking, producing wrinkles and other problems.

When one gets older, the skin, being the most abundant organ of the body, develops apparent and visible signs of aging. As a result, cosmetics and medications aimed at preventing or reversing skin aging consume a significant portion of many people's daily spending, particularly women. This enormous cosmetic need fuels ongoing research into skin aging and therapy.

What factors contribute to skin aging?

The skin, being the largest organ of the body that is exposed to the outside world, is affected by both inherent and extrinsic aging processes. Extrinsic aging is caused by external environmental factors such as air pollution, smoking, poor nutrition, and sun exposure, and results in coarse wrinkles, loss of elasticity, laxity, and a rough-textured appearance. Intrinsic aging is caused by an inevitable physiological process that results in thin, dry skin, fine wrinkles, and gradual dermal atrophy, whereas extrinsic aging is caused by external environmental factors such as air pollution, smoking, poor nutrition, and sun exposure

What are the extrinsic factors that contribute to skin aging?

Sun exposure

The sun's rays are the principal external source of oxidative stress, which causes skin aging. Photoaging is the term for skin damage produced by the sun, and uneven pigmentation is generally one of the first obvious indicators. And it's not only long-term UV radiation that damages skin; daily UV exposure has an impact as well.

Air pollution

Pollution, which is most prevalent in cities, can cause the production of skin-damaging free radicals. Pollution exacerbates the effects of sun exposure, hastening the onset of oxidative stress.

Cigarette smoke contains chemicals and nicotine, which cause an increase in the quantity of free radicals in the skin. They, like pollution, amplify the effects of sunlight, causing oxidative stress

Antioxidants are chemicals that have the power to neutralize free radicals, which cause skin damage and accelerate aging. Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables are a crucial element of maintaining our skin's health as we age.

Unsuitable skincare

If you don't take care of your skin or use things that irritate it, it will age faster. Skin may be cared for by thorough washing with mild products suited for skin type, as well as the frequent use of care products aimed at the skin's major concern. Preventing premature skin aging requires effective sun protection.

What are the signs of skin aging?

Wrinkles are one of the first signs of aging

Skin tends to wrinkle over time. The skin can become less elastic as a result of factors in the environment, such as ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun. Skin can droop and wrinkle as a result of gravity. Certain behaviors, such as smoking, can also cause wrinkles.

Secondary elements that contribute to skin changes include gravity, face movement, and sleeping posture. Gravity causes drooping of the eyebrows and eyelids, looseness and fullness beneath the cheekbones and jaw (jowls and "double chin"), and larger ear lobes as the skin loses its elasticity.

When do you start to see wrinkles?

When the skin loses its suppleness, facial movement lines become more noticeable (usually as people reach their 30s and 40s). Laughter lines, also known as crow's feet, are little, shallow creases that appear around the outer corners of the eyes. Horizontal lines on the forehead, vertical lines above the root of the nose (glabella), and little curved lines on the temples, upper cheekbones, and around the lips are all examples of lines.

Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that appear solely when our skin moves in response to our changing facial expressions. They get more noticeable as we get older, and eventually turn into permanent wrinkles that can be seen even when our faces aren't moving. Vertical brow lines can result from frowning.

loss of volume

Loss of volume in face might be difficult to detect. Lipstick bleeding is usually the first symptom of a loss of volume in the lips. Sagging skin, flattening cheeks, and the impression of a "turkey neck" are all symptoms of a loss of face volume. It changes the overall appearance of the face, giving it an unpleasant, sad, or weary appearance. Drooping skin and volume loss have also been linked to the nasolabial fold, which arises between the nose and the lips.

Deep wrinkles and a lack of suppleness are two signs that your skin is aging

The structure of our skin deteriorates as we age, and it loses elasticity and suppleness. Skin becomes drier, more 'crepey,' and lacks the luster associated with youth. These changes develop at different ages since our skin is as unique as we are, although they are most common in persons aged 50 and over.

Rough skin texture

As people become older, their skin's texture changes. Skin that was once baby-soft and smooth becomes uneven and harsh on the surface due to layers of dead cells and a slowdown of cell renewal.

Dry Skin and Itching

Many older people suffer from dry skin, particularly on their lower thighs, elbows, and lower arms. Dry skin patches feel rough and scaly.

Dull skin

With ageing, the dewy, bright skin of youth vanishes. A fading complexion is caused by diminished moisture levels in the top layer of the skin, which occurs naturally as people age. Younger skin regenerates every three to four weeks, whereas older skin regenerates every four to six weeks.

Uneven skin tone

while we age, our complexion becomes uneven in different areas. This might be attributed to the presence of more melanin in some areas of the skin than others, or to the function of hormone levels in females. This unevenness can make skin appear older than it really is. Skin Tags and Age Spots

Age spots, often known as "liver spots," are flat, brown blotches created by years of exposure to the sun. They are larger than freckles and can be found on the face, arms, and hands. More age spots can be avoided by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against two types of solar radiation (UVA and UVB).

Broken vessels

Blood vessels that have broken and bruised are more frequent in older, thinner skin. They may also become permanently widened. This is commonly known as broken vessels.

Visible pores

Pores become enlarged or more visible with age due to loss of skin elasticity and skin being drawn down by gravity.
